Air Transport System — What research to pave the way for the future ? Two new studies have been published

Air Transport System — What research to pave the way for the future ? Onera, the leading aerospace and Defense research organization in France [1], has explored this question by carrying out two foresight studies engaged by EREA (Association of European Research Establishments in Aeronautics [2]) in 2009, then 2011. These two studies, 50% funded by EREA and 50% by partners' own fundings, were led by the Foresight Department of Onera and in a collaborative way with several research establishments in EREA.

The first study has sought to imagine the role of technologies in 2050 air transport system and to identify the key domains to pave the way for the future. It has considered four scenarios of the world evolution as contexts and backgrounds capable of offering a comprehensive system vision. Two booklets have been published : the first one by Onera, Research paths for a viable air transport system in 2050, July 2010 [3], the other one by EREA, EREA — Vision for the future generation of Air Transport System, October 2010 [4] who merges the DLR's (Germany) and CIRA's (Italy) contributions to the Onera's one.

The second study, From Air Transport System 2050 Vision to planning for research and innovation, May 2012 [5], has deepened the first study analysis and provided to ACARE (Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe) and to the European Commission some recommendations about the research axes to be given top priority in the five following domains: aircraft configuration, propulsion, on-board subsystems and airports. This study has joined 50 engineers from seven european research establishments in aeronautics: CIRA (Italy), DLR (Germany), ILOT (Polland), INCAS (Romania), INTA (Spain), NLR (Netherland) and Onera who has coordinated the study.
